Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils. Tonsils consist of two glandular tissues present on either side of the back side of the throat. Tonsillitis occurs due to certain bacteria, viruses and allergens. It may also occur due to allergy to food preservatives, artificial colors, etc. Tonsils protect the vital organs of the body and get inflamed in the process. Usually the infection occurs due to weak immune system. Tonsils help protect us against the infections. Many people get recurrent tonsillitis due to low immunity. The treatment should aim to strengthen your immunity system and not by removing the tonsils. It is to be noted that tonsillitis is a symptom and not a disease. The most common symptom of tonsillitis is pain in the throat. Young babies may present with an inability to eat. Another symptom is difficult swallowing. This may occur due to pain or increase in the size of the tonsils owing to frequent inflammation. The general symptoms of tonsillitis include fatigue, tired feeling, body ache, loss of appetite, headache, etc.
